Remember when you went to a computer retailer and decided not to buy the laptop just because the screen wasn’t convincing enough? The truth is, the display on a laptop is the most important element for an interaction. If you haven’t kept up with display technology, OLED displays have been powering high-end Windows laptops (and high-end Android phones and iPhones) for quite some time now. But now Asus is bringing OLED display technology to the VivoBook K15 OLED, a laptop that’s just starting out 46,990 rupees. It’s a big deal at this price.

After using the VivoBook K15 OLED for a few weeks, I have a better idea of its strengths and weaknesses. My review focuses on the display as well as the performance of the laptop.

Asus VivoBook K15 OLED review: Design and aesthetics

The VivoBook K15 OLED is mostly plastic, but the laptop’s metallic exterior is pleasing to the eye. Like I said, the chassis is plastic, but it doesn’t look cheap. My review unit was available in a “Transparent Silver” color scheme with a shiny silver logo on the lid and chrome trim on the side. The laptop is not in the ultrabook category, but at 1.8 kg it is still convenient to carry. Certainly not the lightest and thinnest laptop on the market, this device was clearly designed for average users and students.

Connectivity port options are good, with the left side containing a microSD card, full-size HDMI output, USB Type-C port, headphone jack, and USB 3.0 Type-A port. The right side houses two USB 2.0 Type-A ports. There’s no Thunderbolt 4 support here, which is obvious considering the price. The laptop also includes a 720p webcam in the center of the top frame, which is suitable for video calls and online lessons, as well as support for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 wireless connections.

Asus VivoBook K15 OLED review: Display and audio

Maybe the reason you’re even bothering to read this review is the OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display on the VivoBook K15. Unlike the commonly used LCD (liquid crystal display), the OLED works by creating light in each individual pixel that makes up its image, instead of requiring a separate backlight system. As a result, it is able to offer darker blacks and sharper images overall. The iPhone 13 uses an OLED display, just like the ZenBook Pro Duo 15 OLED.

On my test unit, the VivoBook K15’s 15.6-inch 1080p display produced deep reds and vibrant greens. The screen is brighter and more colorful, with fantastic viewing angles and improved blacks. Just watch action movies on the VivoBook K15 and everything will look better than in real life. This is something you might only enjoy if and until you stare at the screen in person.

Speaking of audio, there are two downlink speakers with Harman Kardon tuning. The speakers get loud, but don’t expect bass at this price. There was no crackle when I turned up the volume. The speakers are perfect for YouTube videos, online lessons, or casual listening to music. For anything intense, like watching a movie or playing games, you’ll need headphones or a pair of Bluetooth speakers.

Asus VivoBook K15 OLED review: Keyboard and trackpad

The problem with budget laptops is the mostly cramped keyboard layout and as a user I just hate it. Fortunately, the VivoBook K15 OLED’s keyboard is slightly better than that of a budget laptop. The keys are backlit, they are large and well spaced. While the typing isn’t dry and bouncy, the keys offer plenty of travel. For a change, the Enter key is lined and lettered in lime green, which adds a bold touch to the overall aesthetic of the laptop. What I don’t like is the touchpad, a bit small for my taste but fluid and responsive. You will also find a fingerprint reader in its upper right corner for a secure connection.

Asus VivoBook K15 OLED review: Performance and battery

Performance isn’t bad either, although you need to keep your expectations under control. The VivoBook K15 OLED (at least my test unit) has an Intel Core i3-1115G4 processor with Iris Xe Graphics, 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD. The laptop offers good performance, but it does. depends on what exactly you want to do on this device.

This machine is not designed to lift heavy objects, and if you are a graphic designer or video editor, look for other options. The 11th generation Core i3 processor with 8GB of RAM is enough to view web pages, work with documents, do light photo editing, and handle day-to-day tasks. But I wish the drums were better. Asus packed a 42 watt-hour battery into a laptop, which uses an OLED display with FHD resolution and an entry-level Core i3 processor. In my testing, the laptop held up for four hours, which isn’t great or bad.

Asus VivoBook K15 OLED review: should you buy it?

The VivoBook K15 OLED is a fast laptop for its entry-level price of Rs 46,990. I’m not saying it’s a perfect laptop, and there are some trade-offs in terms of battery and a simple one. 256 GB SSD drive. That said, there’s no reason not to consider the VivoBook K15 OLED. You won’t be ashamed if you carry this laptop around to a cafe, it’s lightweight and fits in pretty much any laptop bag, there are enough ports, the keyboard isn’t great but performs well , and on top of that, you get an OLED screen. The VivoBook K15 OLED will appeal to students or people who want to replace their old laptop. And the good thing: this laptop is compatible with Windows 11 but the timing of updates may vary.
