Australian photographer Matt Palmer has been announced as the big winner of the inaugural Canopy Awards, an international rainforest photography competition organized by the conservation organization Rainforest Rescue.

The competition was created to celebrate the art of rainforest photography, to help raise awareness of rainforest habitats and, in turn, to encourage the protection of these unique ecosystems.

Photographers from around the world were invited to submit photographs in four categories: Habitats, Characters; Hidden treasures and reportage.

Palmer’s landscape image of Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park in Tasmania, which won the competition’s Habitats category, was also selected by the judges as the Canopy Grand Prize winner.

As the grand prize winner, Palmer received a 4-night all-inclusive stay for two at Silky Oaks Lodge in the Daintree Rainforest, with activities on the Daintree River with Solar Whisper and in the forest with Walkabout Cultural Adventures, as well as a cash prize of $3,000.
