Former registrar in charge of Bharathiar University, K. Murugan, has been embroiled in controversy after a photo of his BJP membership on the university’s premises was posted on social media.

Sources familiar with the matter said that on July 1, a day after his retirement, Mr. Murugan took a BJP membership card from two members, whom he met in the waiting room outside the office. the vice-chancellor of the university.

Party members Sabari Girish and Preethi Lakshmi, Secretary of State, Youth Wing, were there for the admission of the former’s daughter. Mr. Murugan, who had ceded the charge to his successor, was at the University to complete his retirement formalities.

When they met Mr. Murugan in the waiting room, he told them that he initiated a process to join the party, made a missed call and obtained a registration number, said Ms. Lakshmi, who took a few pictures and posted one on his Twitter account. As Mr. Murugan had completed some of the formalities, they took out a card they had with them, wrote his name and the registration number he shared to hand him the membership card, Mr. Girish.

This was not expected but happened accidentally, Mr Murugan said, adding that in hindsight he would say it should not have happened at the University. After realizing the impact membership could have on his college career, he chose to give it up. He returned the card and informed the party of his decision, added Murugan.

Vice-Chancellor P. Kaliraj declared on July 1 that he was out of town for official work. He learned of the incident only a few days ago and had asked his staff to monitor what was going on outside his room.
